Production of Osamu Tezuka’s “Unico” is Completed!

The original work is just wonderful. We just amplified it.
The first thing people feel most about recent animated cartoons is that there is not much laughter. Moreover, the ones that are truly enjoyable for children are… There is a lack of what we would call simple laughter, or a kind of light-hearted fun. There are many films that make you think about humanity based on a grand theme, or make you think about youth in a single word, right? I don’t mind that, and I think it’s a good thing. However, that makes the viewers a little older, and I am not satisfied with all of that. We want a modern, what do you call it, Andersen or Disney kind of movie.
In that sense, Mr. Tezuka’s “Unico” really satisfies us both in terms of content and timing. In any case, the original work is wonderful. The film is almost completely based on the original story alone, with its unique characters, laughter, and fantasy. The animator Akio Sugino, the planner Masao Maruyama, and the scenario writer Masatoshi Tsuji brought out the best in the visual aspects of the film.
The story is originally a collection of short stories, but it’s a mix of some of them. Unico, a unicorn child who brings happiness to everyone just by being near, is the main character in the story, but is banished due to the gods’ anger. The first place he were banished to was the land of the ends of the earth, where only the devil’s child exists. But even there, he teaches the demon child the meaning of love. Then he is banished to another place, where he meets Chao, a female cat, and plays a great role in protecting the old woman. This work takes me back to Tezuka’s early days. Animals, dreams and laughter, this is Osamu Tezuka!

手塚治虫の『ユニコ』製作完了!!
この作品の素晴らしさを見て欲しい

原作がとにかく素晴らしいんです。 私達はそれを増幅しただけ。
最近のアニメで一番感じることは、第一に笑いが少ないですよね。 しかも、本当に子供が楽しめるというものが･･････。
単純な笑いっていうのかなあ、 肩のこらない面白さみたいなもの が 少ないですよ。
壮大なテーマのもとに人類を考 えさせるとか、一つのことばに青 春を考えさせるとか、考えさせるという映画が多いでしょう? それはそれでかまわないし、いいことだと思うんです。でも、そうなると見る側の年代として少し上になるし、そればっかりでも不満になてくるんですよ。
現代の、何ていうのかなあ、アンデルセンやディズニーのような映画が欲しいってなって来るんです。
そういう意味で、この手塚さんの「ユニコ」は、内容的にも時期的にも本当に満足させてくれるも のなんですよ。とにかく原作が素晴らしいですよ。キャラクターの特異性、笑いがあって、ファンタスティックで、 もうこの映画は原作だけでほぼ完 成しているんです。それに、アニ メーターの杉野昭夫さんや企画設 定の丸山正雄さん、シナリオの辻 真先さんが映像的にさらにその素 晴らしさを引き出してくれたんで す。
ストーリーは、原作は短編の集まったものなんですが、そのいくつかをミックスしたものなんです。側を通っただけで回りの人々を幸せにしてしまう、ユニコーンの子供ユニコが、神々の怒りをかって追放されるんです。最初に追放されたのが地の果ての国で、ここには悪魔の子しかいない。でも、 ここでも悪魔の子に愛というものを教えてしまうんですね。それで、 また別な所へ追放されてしまうんです、そして、そこで出会った雌 猫のチャオとおばあさんを守るた めに大活躍が始まるわけです。この作品は、手塚さんが初期の 頃に戻った気がしますね。動物と夢と笑い、これが手塚治虫だ!って気がします。
