“Unico, I’m going to feel gentleness when I’m with you…”
1 – Unico’s creator is Osamu Tezuka and nurtured by Akio Sugino

“I only provided the original story and had little to do with the production of the film. I only saw a little of the storyboard when it came out.”
Tezuka, who left everything to the staff, saw a preview a few days ago. “It was very bright and pleasant. I think even small children will enjoy it. Even the original Unico himself looks like a stuffed animal for children.”
“I also told Mr. Sugino that I thought my Chao’s face was not suitable for animation, so I told him to only change the face, but in the end, he seemed to have made the best use of it. Ultimately, he seemed to have made the most of it. I felt the backgrounds were quite adventurous, taking advantage of the best of TV animation and theater animation.”

With that, Mr. Sugino quickly held his hand over the character set-up sheet.
“See, if you hide his horn and put big ears on him, Unico will become Leo. Tezuka’s Jungle Emperor was my first job… It was very nostalgic and embarrassing at the same time.”
“In this situation, we strangely had plenty of time in our schedule to work without an all-nighter. This may be the first and last time I do something like this in the animation business. (Laughs)”
2 – Now, a comparative study of the characters
Sanrio Films, known for “Orpheus of the Stars” (Winds of Change) and other works, has completed “Unico,” which will be screened next spring in March! We hope you will enjoy the mild wonder of fantastic animation, which differs from violence and mecha.

3- And the story was built on a framework of character cuteness.
Long ago, Unico was born in a blooming paradise. On his head was a white horn that had the uncanny power to make people happy. When the heavenly deities learned of this, they panicked. If he made people happy so easily, the gods would lose their jobs. The gods commanded the Spirit of the West Wind to banish Unico. The Spirit of the West Wind took him away, and he became acquainted with a devil’s child, the only one living in the land at the end of the earth.
When the gods learned of this, they sent Unico away again to a different land. This time, the West Wind thoughtfully places him in a blossoming forest, where Chao, an abandoned cat, appears. Unico grants Chao’s wish and transformed her into a human girl, but…
Planning and Setting

“It’s been a long time since I’ve met a character I could call ‘my boy.'”
The Devil’s Child and Chao, and also Unico, says Mr. Maruyama.
“Pon-san’s (Hirata-san) gentle perspective on the characters further refines Akio Sugino’s lush characterization, and my heart skipped a beat when I saw Unico’s eyes look as if they were wet.”

“This time, the process was a little different. Mr. Maruyama and I laid out the basic rails first, Saito, Murano, Kawajiri and his team each brought up partial ideas, which Mr. Tsuji then developed into a scenario.”
“We wanted to make an animation from the original story, which has several episodes, so we created a fun fantasy centered on the two stories about the devil child and Chao.”

ユニコ、きみといるとやさしい気持ちになれそうだ・・・
１ - ユニコの生みの親は手塚治虫育ての親は杉野昭夫

「いやあ、ぼくは原作を差しあげた だけで製作にはほとんどタッチしていないんです。 絵コンテがあがったときに少し見たぐらいですね」
すべてをスタッフにゆだねた手塚さんは数日前に試写を見たという。 「とても明るく、気持ちのよい仕上がりでしたよ。小さな子どもでも十たのしめるんじゃないかな?原一作のユニコそのものもない子向けのぬいぐるみみたいですしね。
それから、ぼくのチャオはアニメ向きの顔ではないように思えたので、 杉野さんにコの顔だけ変えてみたら、と話していたのですが、結局、 を生かしていたみたいでした。 背景はTVアニメと劇場アニメのよさを生かして、かなり冒険ができていたように感じましたよ」

「この作品はほんとにたのしかったな」
そういいながら杉野さん、スッと手をキャラ設定書の上にかざした。
「ホラ、こうやってツノを隠して大きな耳をつけるとユニコがレオになるでしょう。 手塚さんの「ジャングル大帝」がぼくのはじめての仕事だったもんですから······てもなつかしくて、くすぐったいような気分にもなったりしたんです」
「今回の場合、めずらしくスケジュールに余裕があって徹夜なしの作業でした。アニメの仕事ではこんなことは最初にして最後かもしれ ませんね(笑)」
2 - さて、キャラクターを比較研究すると
「星のオルフェウス」などで知られるサンリオフィルムで来春3月に上映される「ユニコ」が完成!! バイオレンスやメカものとは違うファンタステク・アニメのマイルドなすばらしさを味わってほしい。

3 - そして、ストーリーはキャラクターの可愛らしさを骨組みに作られた。
昔、花咲く楽園で生まれたユニコ。 ユニコの頭には人々を幸福にする不思 議な力を持つ白いツノがあった。それを知った天上の神々はあわて、簡単に人を幸福にされては神様は失業してしまう。そこで神々は西風の精に命じユニコを追放させた。西風の精に達れられていった地の果ての国でただひとり住む悪魔の子と知りあい、悪魔の子を幸福にしてしまう。
それを知った神々はユニコをまたち がう地へと連れ去らせた。西風の思いやりで今度は花咲く森の中へ置かれ、 そこへ捨てネコのチャオがやってくる。 ユニコはチャオの望みをかなえてあげて人間の女の子へと姿を変えてあげたのだが･･･

「”うちの子” と呼べるキャラクターに久しぶりに出会えましたよ」
悪魔の子とチャオ、そしてユニコのことを丸山さんはこう語る。
「ポンさん(平田さん) のキャラクターを見つめるやさしい視点によって杉野昭夫のみずみずしいキャラクターづくりにさらに磨きがかかり、 ユニコがまるで濡れているような瞳をするのにドキドキときめいたりしてね」

「今回のプロセスがちょっとかわっていて、まずぼくと丸山さんとで基本レールを敷いて、斉藤、村野、川尻さんたちそれぞれが部分的にアイデアを持ち寄り、それをあらためて辻さんがシナリオに仕上げたんです。
いくつかのエピソードがある原作 からどうしてもアニメにしたいキャら、悪魔の子とチャオのふたつの話を軸にしたたのしいファンタジーができあがりました」
