My Thoughts Regarding Unico

The “Unico” character was created at Sanrio’s studio in Los Angeles.
Back then, Sanrio was producing its first feature-length animated film, Metamorphoses, as a joint Japan-U.S. production, and I drew this during a studio tour. Around that time, Sanrio Publishing had plans to launch a girls’ magazine called Lyrica, and I was set to write a serialized manga featuring an animal as the main character.
“Unico” is my favorite character among the ones I’ve created recently. That’s why I’ve been eagerly awaiting his anime adaptation.
Since the first “Unico” film, released two years ago, was a compilation of two stories, I felt the narrative wasn’t quite substantial enough for a feature-length film. However, this new film, “Unico to the Island of Magic,” has a plot with plenty of twists and turns, and I finally feel like we’ve created a true “Unico” feature film. I believe this is the result of the hard work of Director Murano and his staff.
The focus of this “Unico” story is Kukurukku, the wizard, rather than Unico. Since Unico is a quiet and endearing character, I thought it would be more successful to pair him with a character who has a strong personality. There are also plenty of quirky supporting characters, like his disciples Tolby and Yamaneko, so I think it turned out to be a lively and dynamic production. Above all, I think the most interesting part of this series is Kukurukku’s transformation—something that’s unique to the anime. Also, the music is fantastic; I especially love Tolby’s “Puppet March.”
After watching this film, I’m sure even more people will come to love Unico.

『ユニコ』のキャラクターが生まれた のは、ロスアンゼルスのサンリオのスタジオの中です。
あの頃、サンリオさんはメタモルフォ ーセスという最初の長編アニメを日米合 作で創っていて、そのスタジオに見学に 行った時に描き上げたものなのです。ちょうどその頃、サンリオ出版で『リリカ』 という少女雑誌を出すプランがあって、 動物を主人公とした連載マンガを書くことになっていたのです。
『ユニコ』は僕の最近のキャラクターの中で最も好きなものです。だからアニメになるのを首を長くして待っていました。
二年前に創られた第一作目のユニコは二つの話をまとめたものだったので、長 編映画として物語的にくいたりないなあと思ったのですが、今度の『ユニコ魔法 の島へ』は筋に起伏があって、やっと『ユ ニコ』の長編が出来たなぁと思っています。これはいちに監督の村野氏とスタッフ達の努力のたまものと思います。
今回の『ユニコ』の話の中心はユニコより魔法使いのククルックです。ユニコ はおとなしくて愛くるしいキャラクター だから、個性の強いキャラクターを脇に おいた方が成功するだろうと思ったので す。他にも弟子のトルビー、山猫と、くせのある脇役が沢山出ているので、賑や かでアクセントのついたものになったと 思います。何といっても今回の面白さはアニメならではのククルックの変身だと思います。又、音楽がすばらしく、僕は特にトルビーのあの人形行進曲が大好きです。
この作品を観て、又、ユニコを可愛がってくれる人が増えることでしょう。
