Note: This early Unico in the Island of Magic blurb referred to Kukurukku as a majo (魔女), which is the term used for witches. I’ve kept the pronouns as “her/she,” but am curious if there was a misunderstanding somewhere or because Kukurukku was a toy, he could be whatever. When learning Kukurukku’s past in the film, we know he was used as a villain, taking on evil magician or cruel witch roles, so this could be why he’s referred to this way. Either way, I didn’t want to confuse anyone when it was suddenly calling Kukurukku a female below.

A story of “love” centered on a puppet who becomes a witch
This is the second installment of “Unico,” a series Sanrio aims to develop further. This time, it will be an original story based on director Moribi Murano’s concept art.
— Kukurukku is a broken puppet that was thrown away. Years later, she is reborn as a witch. Driven by a grudge against the person who abandoned her, Kukurukku turns humans into puppets. Meanwhile, a poor boy named Tolby leaves home to become Kukurukku’s apprentice, hoping to give a doll to his beloved Cherry. And so begins the journey of Cherry and Unico as they search for Tolby…
Producer Tsunemasa Hatano spoke about the aim of the project.
“Thanks to Unico and the others, Kukurukku eventually reforms, but the story focuses more on themes of acceptance than on contemporary social issues. I believe this is a work that will remain timeless, even 10 or 30 years from now.”

魔女になった操り人形をめぐる“愛”のストーリー
サンリオがシリーズ化をねらっている、「ユニコ」のバート2。今回は村野守美監督のイメージ・ボードを意にした、オリジナル・ストーリ ―になる。
―クックルックは壊れて捨てられた操り人形。何年かして魔女としてよみがえる。クックルックは 単に自分をでた人間にとらの、 人間を人形に変えてしまう。一方、貧しい少年のドルビーは味のチェリーに人形をあげようと、家を出てクックルックに弟子入りする。そしてドルビーを探す、チェリーとユニコ の旅が始まる･････
「ユニコたちによって、最後にはク マクルックも改心するのですが、作 品では今日的ぐなしのよりも、受、とい ったような的なものをテーマに しています。10年、30年たっても色 あせないで残っていく作品ると思 っています」
