First Look at the Image Boards for “Unico”
Distributed by Sanrio, set for release this summer
The walls of the production studio, Madhouse, are covered with 200 storyboards. Director Moribi Murano drew all of them during the early stages of planning to solidify his vision. Here are just a few of them.
The top panel shows a scene from the first half of the story, where the knowledgeable mushroom hints at the destination of Unico and his friends’ journey. The bottom-right panel shows Tolby, who has learned magic from the wizard Kukurukku, turning the adult obake living in the forest into living puppets.
Production is currently in the storyboard phase but judging by Unico’s mischievous expression and the cheerful concept art, we can look forward to an even more energetic Unico.
▲ “Whenever I draw Unico, he ends up looking like a dog or a cat,” said Mr. Murano.

『ユニコ』の イメージボード初公開
サンリオ配給で夏休み公開
製作現場『マッドハウス』の壁は200枚のイメージボードに占領されている。それらはすべて村 野守美監督が打ち合わせ初期にイメージを固めるために描いたもの。 ここで紹介するのはその一部。
上段は、ものしりのキノコがユニコたちに旅の行く先を示唆する前半の一場面。そして、右下段は 魔法使いククルックに魔法を教えてもらったトルビーが森に住むおばけのおとなたちを生き人形にし てしまうところ。
製作状況は、現在絵コンテ進行中だが、 いたずらっぽいユニコの表情と明るいイメージボードから、 さらに元気なユニコが期待できそう。
