Unico, Unico / Director: Moribi Murano

Unico, Unico
Director: Moribi Murano

It was one year and one month ago that Mr. Maruyama—the anime film producer—said this to me. He put it casually.

“Why don’t you try your hand at directing an anime?”

And since I love witty jokes, I casually replied back.

“Sure, I’ll do it—please let me do it.”

I thought Mr. Maruyama—who is always creating unconventional works—had made yet another unconventional joke, so I decided to play along and delve deeper into the joke. But it turned out to be the classic Sanrio film based on Osamu Tezuka’s Unico.

Tezuka-sensei is a man. Yet, he has created so many “children” over the years. From Astro Boy to Captain Ken, Ken’ichi, Princess Knight, Leo from Jungle Emperor, Phoenix, and even Higeoyaji—if you were to count them all and compile a directory, it would be as thick as a dictionary. Among that vast number of “children” is Unico.

I’m turning that Unico into a movie. My head is pounding like crazy. I feel like I’m about to drown in the torrent of emotions surging through my chest. And so, I ended up taking the plunge and becoming a director. It’s my first time directing, but “film director” doesn’t sound so bad—and I was completely thrilled.

The moment finally arrived to meet Unico. However, the instant I laid eyes on Unico, all my excitement vanished into thin air. I can’t even sleep well at night. Unico, who left his creator, Tezuka-sensei, to come to me, looks so lonely, gazing up at me as if to ask, “Are you okay? Really?”

“What do you eat? When do you get angry or sad? You really do give it your all for the ones you love, don’t you?” My conversations with Unico went on for days and days.

It was time to start making the movie. That meant it was time to crank in. Even so, I was still talking with Unico. “What is love, anyway? What is true courage?”

Just then, I heard Ryoko Moriyama’s “Do Re Mi Fa Lullaby” playing in my ears.

Whenever I see your face swim
In my sea of dreams, I make a prayer
I pray that your heart will stay pure always
We started out as children in the beginning
But eventually we become adults
And walked in the heavy shoes of life

“Unico,” I said, turning to him, “I’m thinking of making this song your theme song because it’s just too wonderful.”

In the movie, Emiko Shiratori sings this “Do-Re-Mi-Fa Lullaby” beautifully and with great feeling.

Assistant Director Hirokawa, with arms as thick as logs, gently—so gently—and tenderly held Unico in his arms for a whole year. And Mr. Kawajiri, the cinematographer—how boldly, yet meticulously, he led Unico into all sorts of worlds. Animation Director Tomizawa—it was precisely through Cherry’s gentle expressions and Unico’s endearing cuteness that Tomizawa, who was neither cute nor handsome himself, truly came to life. Art Director Aoki was so deeply immersed in Unico’s backgrounds that he even dreamed about them, creating that wonderful harmony of colors. And just think how many older sisters and brothers helped raise Unico.

Now, Unico has left my hands—and the hands of the staff who cherished him—and has set out on a journey into the hearts of those who watch him. Unico, who is always devoted and never gives up; Unico, who knows the preciousness of love.

Please don’t ever forget about Unico, even if the West Wind comes and takes him away.

Since you can’t make a song with just one sound
We will also meet love with love
I am singing the melody called today
