Production Progress
The animation is now complete, and all that remains is for animation director Sugino to review the characters. The background work is also nearly finished, and filming is scheduled to wrap up in mid-January.
The production period is two months, which is standard, but for a Sanrio project, that’s on the shorter side. That said, we can devote plenty of time to pre-production meetings and post-production special effects work.
One of the defining features of this work is the great emphasis placed on elements such as music and special effects.
We don’t refer to Unico as an “animation”; we call it a “manga film.” The reason for this is that while the target age group for anime has been rising year by year, we created this film with the intention of returning anime to its roots. In other words, we call Unico a “manga film” because we wanted to make a movie that children—its original target audience—can truly enjoy.
Unico’s power doesn’t come into play on its own. When someone loves Unico from the bottom of their heart, a mysterious magic takes effect and brings happiness to that person. That’s why I struggled to create a setting that would highlight and express Unico’s kindness and “love.” In fact, the supporting characters—like the Devil’s Child and Chao—are the ones with more action and initiative. I wrote roles for the other characters that would bring out the best in Unico.

品の良いキャラで 楽しいギャグを･･･

制作の進行
状況は、アニメーションが全部終わり、後は、作画監督の杉野さんのキャラ・チェックを残すだけ で、背景もほぼ終わり、1月中旬に は、撮影も終了する予定です。
ベースは2ヶ月と、普通ですが、 サンリオの作品としては、早い方ですね。もっとも、制作前の打合わせ、 それから撮影後の特撮処理などは、 充分時間がかけられます。
作品の特徴としては、音楽や特撮 などにも、非常に力を入れています。
我々は「ユニコ」をアニメーションと言わず、『まんが映画』と呼ん でるんですよ。何故かと言いますと、 最近、年々アニメの対象年齢の層が上がって来ている傾向がありますが、 我々は、そんなアニメを原点に戻そうという意図から、今回の作品を作 つたわけです。つまり、本来の対象である子供たちが楽しめる映画を作ろうということで、「ユニコ」をまんが映画」と呼びます。
ユニコの力は自分から働きかけな い。誰かが心からユニコを愛してく れた時、不思議な魔力が働き、相手 を幸福にします。ですから、ユニコ の優しさや「愛」をきわだたせ、表 現するための、まわりのシチュエー ションに苦労しましたね。むしろ、 悪魔の子とかチャオとか、脇役の方 が動きがあるし、積極的なんです。 ユニコに対して、お互いが引き立られるような役を記してみました。
