Physical Appearance

In the manga, Venus appears to look very much like a Greek goddess. She wears a long white toga and has beautiful long hair. Her appearance in the 1979 short is similar, but her design is a little different. In Unico: Awakening, she retains some features but looks more alien. With her head resembling a flower with pink petals, she still has her long flowing hair. Her eyes lack pupils, and she has no mouth. She also appears to change her size throughout the manga.

In the manga and similar to Greek mythology, Venus is quite jealous of anyone drawing attention away from her. She wants to be adorned by all, and when someone or something is more loved, beautiful, or inspiring than her, she will do anything in her power to rid them.

DateMore Information
1976 – 1979In the Lyrica manga version, Venus makes her first appearance. The goddess Venus is jealous of Psyche, and when she learns about Unico, she believes that no mortal should have a unicorn’s love. Venus sends her son, Eros, to make Psyche fall in love with Ganomoth the Beggar. Unico protects Psyche, but the young mortal woman and Eros end up falling in love.
During a pet contest, Venus has Papillon capture Unico and bring him to the goddess. Venus then calls upon Zephyrus, Spirit of the West Wind, and orders her to take Unico far away so that no one will find him. The West Wind took pity on Unico while traveling through time. After passing the Hill of Forgetfulness, she leaves Unico in an unknown time and place. Zephyrus keeps Unico away from Venus, but she soon learns he is still around.

1979When the short was played for the Tezuka Fan Club back in 1979, it told a similar story to the original manga where Unico was taken away from Psyche. The pilot is based on the Black Cloud and White Feather chapter, where Unico must save a young girl from the pollution coming from a nearby factory. Venus appears when Zephyrus is retelling Unico’s story tot he Black Cloud.

2024Venus appears in the first volume of the new Unico manga series, Unico: Awakening as the main antagonist. Venus is the evil goddess who despises the way unicorns inspired humans — especially Unico. She has West Wind take him away where he would roam alone for eternity, but the wind spirit brought Unico to the human realm instead. Sensing Unico’s presence, Venus orders West Wind to find and eliminate him.
