Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!
Before I ramble on about updates, everyone should know that 2026 will be a big year for Unico, as this young little unicorn is turning 50. I find it wonderful to witness another celebration of one of Osamu Tezuka’s characters, but it makes me feel old. (Laughs.) To think that when I first learned of Unico back in 1989 or so, Unico was only 13 by that point. Time flies, doesn’t it?
But it doesn’t matter if you’ve been a fan of Unico since 1976 or 2025, I think we’re all equally excited to see how this little unicorn will be celebrated. When Unico had his 40th anniversary in Japan, there were all sorts of merchandise, events, pop-up cafes, etc. I’m sure there will be similar things happening in 2026 as well. While I’ll be here in the US, I hope those able to go to any events next year enjoy themselves! Can’t wait to see it unfold!
And speaking of celebrating, I’m unsure if there will be anything going on anywhere else in the world, but I wanted to reach out to you (the fans) and see if anyone wanted to share any collection photos, fanart or write something about your love for Unico. I’d love to create a “Spotlight” post with all of your entries to share with everyone around the world. You can find the details in this post I created. The deadline for submitting something is January 30, 2026.
It’s been an extremely busy month, but still made a few updates to the site. I’m not sure how crazy it’ll be in January, but I’ll keep up with any news and updates related to Unico even if I don’t make updates to the site itself. – Added the Unico 50th Anniversary Site to the Links section.
– Added Popiko to the Links section. They sell official Unico merchandise like shirts, hoodies, notebooks, and more!
– The cover of Unico: Lost is now on all pages. Also updated the release date for Unico: Lost. It is now July 7, 2026.
– Added a couple of slots for a few characters that will appear in Unico: Lost on the Scholastic Manga Character page. A handful of pages were shared on Amazon, which feature a few of Tezuka’s other characters. I’m waiting to get better images of them to share on the site, as well as learn what their names will be.
– Updated the newsletter sign-up process. Now, it will ask you to confirm your subscription through your email. There was a jump in subscriptions, which felt unusual, so I want to make sure they’re legit and not spam.
– New site banner/logo! I was going to launch it on January 1, but thought, nah… let’s do it now! I’ve been mentioning a new logo for some time and could finally work on one. Sketched and played with several designs, but most people enjoyed the one you see on the site. I’ve also updated the menu colors across the site as well to match the blue stars in the logo. While I love all aspects of Unico, I always felt the site kind of needed its own version. I love classic Unico, but I also enjoy the colors and style of the newer rendition, so the logo I created is a bit of a mixture. Also opted for a fun and bubbly sans serif font instead of the previous style. I think it looks more fun and playful.
– Added the 2019 Unico Charm by Akane Ishiga to the Unico Plush page.
