Welcome back to another site update!
I mentioned I was taking a break this month, but I fibbed! There were a few things I couldn’t help but update, so you’ll see those below.
Before I ramble on, if you’re a Tezuka fan and haven’t seen the news, Scholastic will partner with Tezuka Productions to release five reimagined titles. And who is going to be working on these titles? Samuel Sattin himself! My jaw dropped when I saw the news, and my first thought was, “Wow! He’s going to be so insanely busy!” This is phenomenal news, and I look forward to seeing these other classic Tezuka titles being reimagined for newer audiences. I know this site’s focus is Unico, but I’m always happy to see more of Tezuka’s works being showcased.
So what did I do in August?
August turned into a crazy month of running around and working on a ton of things. If you’re a parent, you know how busy the beginning of the school year can be. After the first week, my youngest daughter caught a cold and spread it to the rest of us. That’s okay, I made one of our favorite comfort foods — curry!
Also celebrated my birthday this month. I’m officially the answer to life, the universe, and everything. (Some of you will understand this reference.) Other geeky facts to add are that I share the same birthday with Squall Leonhart from Final Fantasy VIII and Gyomei Himejima from Demon Slayer. I rarely do anything for my birthday, but my husband got me a really awesome 3D crystal with Unico artwork in it! Yay!
I’ve continued my research on various things for a Unico post that is taking me forever to write up. The momentum will be there and then bam — new information I discover makes me have to dig deeper or rethink things. I’ve read a lot about Osamu Tezuka’s life and works these past few years to have a better understanding of what inspired him, but there’s always something that pops up to make me backtrack. This isn’t bad, it simply means I need to research other areas more before presenting any information. I’m far from an expert on the God of Manga, but having more knowledge about him and his work also helps with understanding Unico and his stories.
Besides research, I’ve been editing my story a lot this month. One thing I’m enjoying is how self-editing actually helps you become a better writer. I know some people write a bunch of words and send them off to various editors, but your skill as a writer truly grows when you face the areas you need to improve on. Hopefully I’ll finish everything someday!
In Unico-related news, there were a few events and items released this month. The deck of playing cards is super cute, so definitely check them out. It’s funny to think that those cards are made here in the USA and then sold in Japan. If I want to purchase them, I’ll have to import them here. Haha!
