Five years of Unico magic!

Hello Unico fans!

Wow, can you believe the site hit another milestone? It doesn’t feel like five years has passed, but it continues to be a fun ride.

I’d like to give a big shout out to everyone who visits this site. Honestly, without you, it wouldn’t be where it is today. Every year, I’m amazed by how kind everyone is. I’m thankful to everyone, and your love for Unico keeps me updating this site to ensure you have Unico-related news, information, and more. So, thank you!

For this anniversary post, I thought I’d share some funny things, as well as looking back on the past year. This post may not be as cool or interesting as last year’s post, but I hope you’ll enjoy. And if not, well… check out last year’s post! Yay!

In the beginning, it was really all about cataloguing books and movie information for the original Unico. Just a handful of information you might not find on regular sites. Since then, the site has expanded to not only share information on merchandise, characters, translations, and more, but also the latest series by Samuel Sattin and Gurihiru. Fans from across the globe, of all ages, are coming together to enjoy Osamu Tezuka’s cute little unicorn. How cool is that?

But where does all this site work take place? Well, I’ll show you the My Unico Fans desk!

The Work Zone

Be amazed and gaze upon its glory! The desk of My Unico Fans. A hodgepodge of fandoms all rolled into one place! The only thing its missing is the massive amounts of caffeine needed to power my body so I may continue to create content! Alas, there is nothing but a Little Debbie Swiss Roll for nourishment. I may perish!

Anyway! Like most people, I’m always at my desk. Not only do I work on the site here, but it’s where I do practically everything else. My actual job is remote, so I’m here doing my thing and getting paid. I make art and write here. Sometimes I’m even able to game when I find time.

Yes, it looks like chaos, but I promise I actually know where everything is. (Laughs.) It’s literally a geeky work desk that keeps me inspired — or at least that’s what I tell myself. I know people online post their setups, and they’ll look amazing, but you’re not getting that here I’m afraid. My desktop is too shy to show herself.

I have designated areas for whatever I’m working on. As you can tell from the photo above, there is a pile of Unico-related items, and that’s where my materials go for the site. Near the plushies are notebooks and printed stuff for my story I’m editing/writing (no, it’s not Unico-related, just fantasy). I’d say Unico and my story are my biggest long-term projects.

Here’s a closer look at that Unico pile. When I’m working on things, say, translating or writing a blog post, this is where I’ll put the materials. Since I’m writing a review for Unico: Lost and updating the site, I’ll obviously need the book handy. The other items are magazines I translated Unico blurbs, and a few items I’ve picked up.

Let’s check out some site statistics next! Ever wondered what pages and posts people are checking out? So did I, so I had to go look. Since we’re celebrating the fifth anniversary of the site, I figured doing a “Top 5” would be interesting enough.

Top 5 Posts

Curious what posts were popular this year? Check them out below! While the Unico: Awakening related posts fluctuate in popularity, the Spotlight post focusing on the Sphinxes has been in the top 5 for a while now.

1. Unico: Lost by Scholastic’s Graphix

It’s like there’s a theme going on, huh? I think Unico: Lost was the most popular topic for the site this year. Which is great! That means a lot of people were searching for more information about it.

Site Accomplishments

One thing I’ve done this year that turned out great was inviting other fans and giving them the opportunity to share their love for Unico. I’d like to do more of these in the future and hope you all would enjoy too.

I also did my first interview for the site, and that was such a big step for me as I’m always afraid of bothering people. I’m not a pro at interviewing, but I wanted to do it for the fans. Samuel Sattin is an amazing guy, and I’m always happy to promote his work when I can. Same goes for Gurihiru. I know I won’t be able to interview them, but I still enjoy sharing the love. Everyone is working hard and it’s always nice to show our appreciation.

Future Site Goals

I haven’t given myself any big goals as of yet. Right now, I’m mainly focusing on adding information to the site and keeping up with Unico news. Because of my hectic schedule lately, I’ve fallen behind on writing those fun little spotlight posts I think a lot of you enjoy. I’m hoping to get back into it soon though. For now, I’ll be posting a new poll for visitors to check out. This will be about the content you’d like to see on the site and so on. I believe I’ve done a poll like this once before, but it doesn’t hurt to see if the answers have changed.

Well, I suppose that wraps it up for this years’ anniversary. I’ve still got a lot of work to do on the site before the end of the month. Thank you again for stopping by and let’s see where the site goes by next year!
