We’re back with another wonderful story from Jesse! Unico inspires in so many ways, and this was such a lovely read. Check out Jesse’s story below!
Hi, my name is Jesse. I first watched Unico as a kid on the Disney Channel, and I immediately fell in love with the character and his world.

This was before I even knew what anime was, but the art style, the imagery, and the emotional depth felt magical to me. There was something beautiful and powerful in Unico’s spirit that stayed with me long after the credits rolled.
In many ways, Unico helped shape my creative eye. The aesthetics, the storytelling, and the heart of the character influenced what I find visually inspiring even today. More importantly, Unico helped spark my love of drawing and making art, a passion I have carried with me throughout my life.
I am now 44 years old, and I still hold Unico close to my heart. Today, I serve as the Executive Director of a nonprofit called Youth Arts Collective, where I help create a safe and welcoming space for young artists to grow, express themselves, and build community. In a beautiful full-circle way, the inspiration I felt from Unico as a child now lives on through the creative opportunities I help provide for others.

One of my most treasured possessions is an original animation cel of Unico that I found on eBay years ago. I bought it because I felt lucky to have the opportunity, and I am honored to hold a small piece of Unico’s animation history. Even funnier: years later, an ex-girlfriend shared an old photo of us from around 2000. In the background, on my old Compaq Presario computer, my desktop wallpaper was the exact same Unico image that I would later own as an animation cel. Somehow, Unico had been following me all along.
I still love Unico to this day, and I encourage folks of all ages, longtime and new, to discover his adventures. His kindness, resilience, and wonder continue to inspire me, just as they did when I was a kid.
