It’s the end of September, and my fingers are about to fall off from all the various writing I’ve had to do. This month I focused on a few areas, but mainly wanted to give the First Grader version of Unico some love. If you’re not familiar, this is the series of comics that ran from 1980 to 1984 in Japan after the original series ended. Because this version of Unico wasn’t published in many other countries, I wanted to share more about it with those who might find it interesting. There was a bit of info on the site, but I’m happy to finally add more of this aspect of Unico, as I’ve been wanting to work on it for some time now. My level of Japanese is fairly low, so I hope I could capture everything well.

I’ll create synopsis pages for the other comics as well in the future, but I felt this version of Unico was the bigger task to tackle and had the least amount of information out there on the internet, especially in English. Unfortunately, this means I didn’t have time to add anything to the Merchandise Museum part of the site. Ahhh… the days are flying by! There are a few things I’ll be photographing, hopefully later this week, and that’s stuff like calendars and other little things. I would have loved to have added the Unico calendar based on the First Grader version, but I suppose it’ll have to wait until October.

Before I go on to the updates, I wanted to share a fun video by Oblivious Ben titled “The Complete History of Unico.” Ben has spent over a year working on the video, and it’s worth the watch as he covers a lot! Check it out!

– Updated and added several calendar cover images in the Calendar section. Unico and his friends are in a TON of calendars, and I’ve been wanting to update the page for a while. While I don’t own most of these calendars (I only have four), I’ll do my best to share information and Unico-related images available. And speaking of calendars, the 2026 Osamu Tezuka calendar goes on sale October 1 (Night Wind even appears in the background of September!).

– Added another “appearance” to Unico’s character profile page. This update is from 2022 and features the actress Hana Kondo speaking about Unico and the manga. You’ll find the link to the interview (in Japanese) and a photo of her holding the manga.

– Speaking of the character profile pages, I’ve finally begun working on the First Grader Version. While each comic typically has the same handful of characters, there are a lot of others popping in, including Ultraman, Jabba the Cat, Phoenix, Melmo, and more. My goal is to work on the actual character pages once I’ve been able to add all the images and information. So far, I’ve created the page, made a section for each comic, and added a handful of images and links to pages I already have profiles for.

– Updated a few translations for the comic titles for the First Grader Magazine page. There were only a few I felt needed to be updated. If it ever receives an official release in English, I’ll most likely have to update everything. Haha!

– Want to know what goes on in each chapter of the First Grader version of Unico? Well, I’m happy to share that I’ve finally made a page just for that. The Unico First Grader Version Chapters page may not be finished, but will have synopses of all 43 chapters for you to read. There are still 20 more chapters to do, but hope to be finished by the end of October. While I don’t go into detail about some of the Japanese puns that appear in this manga, I still explain what happens. This version of Unico was never published in English, and I know many fans are eager to know what kind of trouble Unico and his friends experience. It’s a fairly wordy page, so if you have some type of “read aloud” feature, I’d definitely recommend it!

– Added Unico: Perseguido, the Portuguese edition of Unico: Hunted to the Unico: Hunted Related Publications page. It was released on September 22, 2025!

– Added Unico: Pourchassé, the Canadian French edition of Unico: Hunted to the Unico: Hunted Related Publications page. It’ll be released on January 19, 2026!

– Added information about the Japanese edition of Unico: Awakening to the ユニコ: 目覚めのおはなし page. This differs from the Kickstarter version, and may even have a different title. Some information is popping up online about a release date, but it may change. I’ll update when more information is available, but a few sites show a release date of December 18, 2025.

– The International menu tab had a drop-down menu with a list of languages before, but I have taken it out due to there being way too many languages being added. You’ll still find the list on the International page. This change comes about because of the new manga series being released around the world and in more languages than ever. More language pages to come as well!
