You might have seen the news already, but the pilot anime Unico: Black Cloud and White Feathers (1979) is now officially on the Tezuka Productions’ YouTube channel for a limited time. Since the second volume of the new series Unico: Hunted is out, what a wonderful time to release this short to those who have yet to see it! Both Unico: Black Cloud and White Feathers and Unico: Hunted are based on the manga chapter by Osamu Tezuka.

On April 30, 1979, during the first ever Osamu Tezuka Fan Convention (see more about it here), they screened the short to a thousand Tezuka fans. They gave away several prizes during the convention, including Unico items like postcards and manuscript, to name a few. The animation did not receive a theatrical release, but was released on video formats such as LaserDisc and VHS. Later, they added it to DVD and Blu-ray releases.

They made the pilot in hopes a fully animated film would be popular. Thankfully, the short animation was received well by the audience, and they released two films in 1981 and 1983.

It may not be available globally and is only available in Japanese language with a variety of language subtitles.
